Exploring the world of fonts

Howdy!

This article is a ‘Font Essay’ which illustrates different uses of typography in the real world. For this assignment, I explored places like malls, super markets, grocery stoores and UMBC campus to find variety of typography. I was amazed at the spectrum of font faces used on the different products like packaging, posters, t shirts, etc. The exploration changed my perspective towards typography and its importance in our daily life.

The myriad of types made me think about how a slight variation in the font style can entirely change the meaning and perception of a font style. The height, width, stroke, filigrees play a very vital role in creation of font. also, the physics of fonts define the emotion the character will evoke in the user. For instance, the way ‘The Godfather’ is written demands authority, respect and some fear; the freshness in ‘Fanta’ makes us feel refreshing!; a gentle touch to the Dove associates it to women. So, the font types certainly predicts the users reactions and emotions, and creates a different experience altogether.
